What? No answers yet?
An Optima will fit in either battery box. However, it will fit only on it's side and it will stick out a little. You can mount it in any position. You'll need to fabricate some holddown brackets to hold it in place securely and probably install a longer ground cable. Don't forget to insulate the unused cables on the opposite side.
A more ambitious project is to install the battery in the smugglers box.

Where is the smugglers Box?
The smuggler's box is located where the air conditioning blower would go, in the trunk. Theres a latch and a cavity where the steering rack penetrates.
Does anyone have a photo that they can post that illustrates the installation of an Optima in the battery box? Thank you.

Here's what I came up with. Should work on either side.

Scott,
Your battery mount looks clean and functional. Are you using anything else to keep the battery from sliding rearward or does the strap secure it from moving?
Sherwood Lee
That bracket keeps the battery from moving AT ALL. I thought about putting a block in front of it, but it's not necessary. With the gap in between the upper and lower straps, and the bolt to tighten it down, there's no way it's going to move. I bought the strap material and the bolt/nut/washers at a local Home Depot for less then $5 total. I didn't need the stock look, and it had to hold it in tight.
