In order to have the lower portion of my rear Koni's powder-coated, I see that the cylinder is seemingly held in place with a screw-on collar not unlike those on the front struts. Car is a 1970 911-S with later (replacement) Konis installed. With the collar removed, will it be as simple as pulling the cylinder up and out as I did on the fronts, or is there 'trouble' lurking inside the tube...just never did this on the rears and would appreciate thoughts. Thank you.
The rears are not inserts, they are normal shocks. I don't think it is a good idea to take them apart unless you are having them re-built.
Why not just buy a new pair? Jason at Paragon would be happy to help out I'm sure.
You can take them apart. The edge will have a section peened over to prevent them from unscrewing. They require a pin spanner wrench of appropriate size. Might be hard to repeen them without damaging the powder coating.
If you take them apart you will be staring at the internals. Keep them Uber clean. Use the opportunity to replace the upper o-ring seals and then replace the damping oil. At this point you can tune the performance to match your torsion bars by changing shock oil weight. ;)
Ad David mentioned it might be easier to get new ones unless you require the matching date code. Otherwise, they can be painted. Somewhere there is an RAL code for the paint color.
