I don't think I've ever seen Alaska Blue...very nice!
My first Porsche was a 914, then went to '87 911 (couldn't deal with driving to work in TX w/ no A/C in suit & tie), then back to 914 when I had another daily driver, then to 914-6 and now added an early 911.
I think the single biggest reason for the 914 being the "red headed step child" is its styling. The 911 is one of the all time classic designs whereas the 914, love it or hate it, is more quirky than classically beautiful.
Switching between 911 and 914 with similar motors, here's what I observe in terms of differences:
911
Incredibly "solid" feel
Everybody knows what it is
It really wants to go at least 80mph
914
Feels more nimble, despite noticeably more flex in chassis
Some things do feel a bit "cheap"
It's easier to transport stuff, having one wide shallow and one narrow but deep trunk.
If you've never driven a reasonably well sorted 914 with modern tires, you're missing out on something pretty cool, IMHO.
To me the only "downer" about a "fourteen-er" is the sound of the engine.
There is NO comparison between a 4 cyl and 6 cyl engine.
Looks, sound, the way they deliver power, etc, etc.
That said, I'd be on a good factory 914-6 in a heartbeat....if they hadn't started approaching early 911 asking prices.
Wow, they've really gone up recently.
The ignition key is in the wrong spot = NARP. ;)
Last time I checked the ignition key on the 356 Speedster was in the wrong spot too :0 If that's your fixation get a 914/6.
I love the early 911 and the 914 is a love it or hate it look but the raw and light feel and extremely direct handling is emotional. You really should try a well sorted one, 4 or 6. Here's a few of the beauties Ive owned over the years and could kick myself to selling some.
Full disclosure - I have a soft spot for underappreciated cars. But I really do love my 914.

Very nice creamsicle!
One would never compare a pair of sneakers to their favorite dress shoe but they both have their place.
For those who have never driven a really tight and tidy 2.0 914 they are missing one of the more subtle Porsche experiences. One of the better ways to spend $15-20k.
