Historic '75 ex- Jurgen Barth 924 '79 Round Australia Rally car found
Thought I'd share this here given it's the 40th anniversary of transaxle Porsche's this year.....
We pulled it from a barn recently after prising it from an owner of 18 years after 6 quiet years of trying to do so, and it was featured in the Porschestrasse display at the recent Rennsport 2016 event in Sydney.
The car is an 11.75 build 1976 model year 924, the 1st RHD car we understand and the 1976 Melbourne Motor Show car, and one which was prepared by our Porsche Distributor Alan Hamilton and the Porsche Factory for the gruelling 1979 Repco Round Australia Rally. It finished 9th in this rally, after racing for 14 days and 18885kms around Australia, driven by Jurgen Barth and Roland Kussmaul. The car was extensively prepared with a normally aspirated MFI engine, 928 brakes, LSD, close ratio gear box, up-rated and strengthened suspension, seam welded body, fiber glass bonnet, a full roll cage and lightweight plexiglass windows and stripped interior and many other special features.
It also finished 1st in the 2.0 litre class in this event, which was also the first international FIA victory for a Porsche 924. The car was FIA titled as a Group 4 car, and is one of only 4 or 5 924 so accredited. As a result of this first international FIA victory for a 924 Jurgen Barth is noted as saying this result solidified the agenda to proceed with the Carrera GT and Le Mans 924 programs.
It is featured in the “Porsche 924 Carrera” book by Roy Smith on pg 52-57. It’s in well used, as rallied condition and is largely original.
