Access port for early 901 transmission cars

I'll be installing an early 901 transmission in a 69 long wheelbase car. Somewhere I read or heard that there is an access port in the earlier cars that isn't on the later cars. I think it was for clutch adjustment. Is this correct? If so, do I need to add this access port to my car?

1969 911's came with the 901 transaxle. 1970-1971 came with the 911 transaxle, which is derived from the 901 version. I don't see the issue.

I have written in my early notes for the project not to forget the access port. I wonder if I have it backwards. We looked at a 71 transmission for the project before deciding on the early one. Maybe the 911 trans requires an access port.

Whatever, I'm convinced that I'm not forgetting to add an access port that I'll need later.

I think the access port you're talking about is what's found on 70 and 71 901 trannys. For these years only, they have a "pull-type" clutch. Because of this, the release bearing has to be rotated 90 degrees during removal or installation. To rotate the bearing, you reach through the access port. Earlier 901 trannys are "push-type" and you don't need to rotate anything. Therefore, no access port (I'm assuming; I have a 70 tranny and don't know about the earlier ones.)

Now I see what you are getting at Alan. Ckissick has it right. That's why I didn't understand your concern - no prob with the 901 Transaxle going in the 1969... I've had many cars with both the early 901 and the 911 Trans (as well as the 915). I still prefer the shift pattern on the 901's, and those boxes are lighter. I'll be glad to help if you have any other questions.
