Chuck, I think they just got too hot. 34/36 psi should be fine. I have not worn mine out yet (down to 1/4 to 1/2 tread). However, I am unsure of the mileage so far - probably about 10 autocrosses and 5,000 street miles.
I have not found them to fall away quickly, but they are a relatively soft street compound and will wear accordingly - pretty easy to flat spot. I have found they are really best suited as a high performance dual dry/wet tire. For your climate, there may be a better choice, but I'm not sure what to recommend in the sizes you require. By the way (not that it would ever be a problem for you in So. Cal.), but SO3s are terrible in the snow - they pack up really bad!
