That is a great question, and one that I would like to know. I will ask my GURU - Kevin Jeannette- from Gunnar Racing . If it can be done he has done it.
International Mercantile sells the plates and will also stamp them for an additional charge. I've never used them, don't know how accurate they are.

Ok, I will contact them and let you know how it goes.
Thank You.
What year is that plate from. Looks like a machine gang stamp. Most of the plates I see, mostly early 70's are hand stamped, uneven in pressure and alignment. Gled
It's a 1971.. And yes all the ones that I have seen that heve been redone look generic or fake. Here a picture of another one that I found in Internet. They are identical.
I have about a dozen photos from 1971 that are the same. A different font from the 60's badges. I can pretty much tell what year a badge is with a glance; from 1965 through 1971.
I think CPR will stamp a paint plate for you.
FWIW, i went to a local jeweler and had it engraved.
they matched the font pretty well.
A local machinist friend had the correct stamps -- both size and font. I used a drill press to hold the punch shafts perpendicular to the paint tag. The force used to do the full character and not distort the (very soft) tag is hard to calculate and repeat. A gang stamp setup might require machining the punch shafts to get the kerning correct. It's something of a challenge. International Mercantile's stamps were not correct for my paint tag -- too small.
If you're doing this yourself, buy lots of tags or practice sheets of aluminum.
