Dad's 1970 Porsche 911 (29 years since last start)

Hello from West Texas.

This is my first post, and hopefully not my last post :D

My dad, born in Canada, 1942, joined the United States Air Force in 1960, and served 31 years, achieving the rank of Chief Master Sergeant.

While stationed in Germany in the '80s, he purchased a 1970 Porsche 911.

He kept it with him throughout his time in Germany, and when he was sent to Hawaii towards the end of his time in the Air Force, he shipped his Porsche to have and drive in Hawaii.

Fast forward to July 1992, and I'm born. Shortly afterwards, in late '92, mom and dad shipped themselves and the Porsche to Texas.

Once in Texas, the car was unloaded, and in the process of doing so, the shipping company ran over a concrete barrier and did some damage to the front end of the car, including the bumper, to what extent I'm not sure.

So, in to storage she went, in the winter of '92.

Fast forward to 2021, my dad is 79 years old, and in less than ideal health, however, he retains all of his mental faculties and fortitude.

And, with that, he knows that I have heard all the stories of the "old bomb" and have played in, on, and around the car since I was able to walk. And, this past weekend, he asked me to truck it from his property to my garage, in hopes that I would be able to give it better shelter, and do what work I could on it, as I was able to.

And so here I am, with not a clue what I have on my hands, and nothing but time to do my dad's old bomb justice.

That’s a wonderful story and you’ve definitely come to the right place. Car appears to no longer have its original “long hood” and has the ‘74 model year and later “impact bumper” as opposed to the original bumper it came with, no doubt as a result of the accident you described. Also has a later model side view mirror. Looks to be in decent shape otherwise. Welcome!

What is the VIN of the "Old bomb"? This will help to know what version this is.

Yes, the VIN will help us help you. If the car is a 1970, then the front is all wrong, and the cost to correct that would likely be offset by the increase in value of having the car original. But we do need to see more to determine what needs correcting. The VIN reveals the model year and the engine model. If you need help determining the original configuration, then I can help.

An S! A great start to this journey!

Here is a photo of 9110300195 showing the front that yours should have. So an S is a really sweet car, and if it has been sitting for so long without running it will require quite a bit of work BEFORE you attempt to start it. Do not buy any batteries yet.

What's under those sheepskins? The last time I inspected a 71S and looked under seat covers, I found a pristine set of sport seats.:eek::cool:

Well this is interesting.. The seats are in 72/73 vinyl with cord which is VERY Euro. The headrests are 69-71. The seat belts are Euro as well. Rear Parcel Shelf has been changed out. Black headliner? If so, that has been changed out.

Are the gauges Euro as well??

I never knew there was a sticker to indicate the e-brake idiot light. I had no idea what that light was for when I got my 911 until I researched it -- this sticker would have helped!

Looks like your Tach and Speedo aren't for a 70S or tach redline would be higher (7100?) and speedo to 150.

Good point - I guess I assumed it was original, but that may not be the case. It is similar to the 'Unleaded Fuel Only' sticker on my 911SC fuel gauge - which is original.

**realizing I misunderstood your post. I believe we are both assuming this is an original sticker and the question is if there are reproductions available...

Hmmm, to the casual observer, your car is interesting in the modified condition it's in. Painstaking time, energy, will go to make it original, as most folks pursue this today. But modified suspension, brakes, 250 hp, could be a fun journey as well.

It let others explain where the engine number is located but I still hope that you've got the original engine.

A 70S is a great model (even if there isn't really a bad one when it comes to early 911s). :cool:

Do you have a picture of the paint plate, on the driver's side door post?
This could let us know what the original color was.

Next question will be the extent of the front modification of the car.

Perhaps the hinge, circled in yellow, will give a clue to original color? but I think some early 70 cars had black hinges.

And interesting to see the plastic relay cover in 1970. (Circled in green)
I thought they showed up after Dec1971 (with the smaller plastic, used only about 6 months, with slots for two large round thumb screws)
There was a tab welded onto the body in that area, for the top screw.
Perhaps the 'S' got these covers a year before the 'T'.
maybe this was a European car thing. I saw one on the 70 McQueen car.

It certainly looks like you've still got the original S engine (which would be terrific). To be sure, you need to find the engine number stamping (right side of the fan, should be something like *61xxxxx*, and run it past someone who can check the chassis/engine number combination, for example member davep. (It might be better to not share the engine number publicly because the combination might be misused by someone in the future.)

By the way, that engine should be thoroughly checked and preferably taken apart before you attempt to start it (as said before). It's puzzling why you don't have the matching tachometer.

Pure speculation on my part but I’m guessing when the car was imported to the US they swapped it out to a US tach

Tachometer is from a 911 T. Speedo is from a 912. Your engine number should start with 630…..
Engine appears to be correct at first glance. What does the Paint code say in the drivers door jam?

not all early cars are painted and detailed the same way, even within a model year run there can be changes.

Well, it seems that you've got a very interesting project in your garage. It could be expensive to restore this car but she definitely deserve it, from a financial point of view.
You just need to decide if you want to follow that path.

The engine seems to be from a late 1971 2.2 S so is not original, but of the correct type, anyhow.

Man, a light yellow 1970 911S with a great backstory -- doesn't get much cooler than that.
