Auction Description:
We are pleased to offer this 1973 Porsche 911S Targa finished in Silver Metallic over a black interior. Reported by the seller to be the 326th car built out of only 914 “911S” Targas for the model year, this 1973 example was originally delivered by Autohaus Porsche-Audi in Charlotte, North Carolina. It has since been kept in excellent overall condition with a full respray, some refurbishment of the interior, and a custom full rebuild of the original engine to upgraded 2.7 RS specifications. With approximately 20k miles shown on the odometer and just over 6k miles driven with the rebuilt motor, this beautifully sorted long hood 911S Targa is now being offered by its seller in California.
This Targa is reported to have been professionally refinished in its factory original color of Silver Metallic (936) approximately 20 years ago under previous ownership. The exterior is said to be in outstanding condition with excellent panel fitment, and the seller confirms the original floor pans to be completely intact. As a U.S-spec 1973 example, this 911 can be distinguished by its black front horn grilles and indicator surrounds as well as its rubber front bumper guards. A front valence spoiler is also equipped for high-speed stability, a factory feature unique to the S-model. This Targa rides on factory flat 6” Fuchs alloy wheels that come dressed in BF Goodrich G-Force Sport tires.
The black interior is said to be in excellent, partially restored condition. The front seats have been reupholstered in leather, and new German carpeting has been installed throughout the cabin. The dashboard is said to be in great shape along with the original door pockets. This S-model also features a leather-wrapped steering wheel. A later-model Blaupunkt radio has been installed and the seller confirms all gauges and accessories to be fully functional.
This 911S carries its original number matching 2.4 flat-six fuel-injected engine that was completely rebuilt by Automobile Associates of Canton Inc. in Connecticut just over 6k miles ago. During this time, the engine was reassembled to 2.7 RS specifications with the following items:
- Updated Oil Pump
- Upgraded Oil Bypass System
- Carrera Chain Tensioners
- Rebuilt MFI Injection Pump
- Reground Original S Cams
- New Piston and Cylinder Set
- New Main Bearing Set
- New Connecting Rods
- New Cylinder Head Studs
- Rebuild Rocker Arms and Polish Shafts
- Valve Job (Reface and Bevel 90mm, R&R 12 Guides, R&R Exhaust Studs and Fly Cut Gasket Area) Magnaflux Crank
- Bore For 2.7 L Barrels
The rear wheels are driven through a smooth-shifting 915 5-speed manual gearbox and this 911S also features 4-wheel disc brakes and an original front suspension. Records are said to be included from the previous owner dating back to 2007 and this Targa is noted to be in excellent running order. This sale will include a clean title. If you’re in search of a nicely presented long-hood 911 Targa, this stunning 1973 911S makes an excellent choice.

This 911 2.4 S was completed in June 1973 and delivered June 30th 1973 in France to its first owner, handsomely finished in grey over black leatherette upholstery and equipped with a sportomatic gearbox, Airco, electrical windows and radio.
In 1974 the first owner took the car with him to Dubai where the car stayed until 1990. In 1987 the car was sold to its second owner in Dubai, who imported later in 1990 the car to the Netherlands. In 1991, the car was sold to its third owner; in 1998 it was passed on to its fourth owner who decided to completely restore the elfer in 1999. Like this the car underwent a complete nut-and-bolt restauration by marque specialist Lammertink between 1999 and 2000. A complete photo reportage is available, as well as lots of invoices of all work done.
The car was selected by 3com as the top prize for a worldwide competition in 2003. The winner of this competition, a Dutchman (5th owner), immediately sold the car to the first Belgian owner at the beginning of 2004. In 2008 the 7th owner bought the car and kept the car for almost 13 years.
An oil service just has been performed and all engine and gearbox gaskets have been changed to eliminate all oil leaks.
The car is matching number and this for the body, engine and gearbox (sportomatic). Currently the car is equipped with a period correct 5 speed gearbox, however, the numbers matching sportomatic gearbox still is with the car.
It is amazing how well documented this car is! All history since 1987 (34 years!) still is present!

Comprehensively restored to original specification, this car features a host of the prized features that makes the ‘S’ such a favourite amongst early 911 models, whilst the overhauled original engine and gearbox ensure this car delivers the expected ‘S’ performance on the road too. These cars are beautifully pure to drive while the S upgrades really gave it the performance and handling to match the looks and image of Porsche.
The short wheelbase 2-litre 911 S is one of our favourite of all Porsche models. Fresh from a complete “nut-and-bolt” restoration performed by marque specialist, Bulen, this beauty is ready to be enjoyed.
Chassis 11800767 is an original, matching-numbers and matching colours 911 2.0 S that was delivered on March 11th 1968 to its first owner by Islinger, Mannheim in Germany. The car was produced from factory in Blutorange in combination with a black interior.
