A Touring car went for half of that.

Apples and Oranges
Yes, but apples don't cost 2X what oranges do. :D

In terms of performance, etc - how much of a difference is there between an M471 and an M472? Is it a material difference?
Tenths, hundredths, thousandths.
Materials used (or not used like undercoating) and thinner metal on early cars and thinner glass. Otherwise it's just "numbers".
And we've all seen what numbers do to values. IMHO a 911-T is as good a car as a 911-S. Same chassis, same transmission, same interior, same engine. As a percentage, how much of the engine in a 911-S and a 911-T is different? Pistons, valve sizes. MFI Pump tuning and porting of the heads. That's not much.
On an RS there is NO difference.
BTW: One of our esteemed members here told me "back in the day" they used to sell guys on buying "T"'s because they could make them as fast or faster than an "S" for less money. My kind of gear head! True story. :p
