I know where you live Peter...
I've got a pair of 914's. Black car is auto-x only and FTD winner at Charlotte Parade. Blue car is a 6 conversion. 3.2 built by Greg Fordahl and extremely FAST!
Here's mine.
1974 914 LE Creamsicle. 2nd VIN in registry. 100% restored. As new.
Fun, fun car.

Great 74 teener John.
my sunflower 74, serial #0089 pales in comparison, but they are brothers in arms......
someday I will get with the 21st century and get a digital camera and learn to post pics.
Then you will see it in all its glory
Gorgeous John...
I know this is not a 914 technical forum, but have a question about my nervous hair-trigger steering. Even the slightest steering inputs results in a quick change in direction. Nervous is the best word. In high speed sweepers (let's say hypothetically, 60 on a posted 35 MPH corner) where my 911 would carve it effortlessly, I find myself holding on for dear life. Any one have this situation and what did it take to correct it. (the car has been aligned corner balanced, has a full Elephant polybronze set-up with front sway bar) Thanks.
Edit: the 914 has the same tire wheel combo as the 911, 6s and 7s with the same rubber.
I immediately thought rack too but worm gears are worm gears unless there's something catastrophic there. It could be that it needs to be tightened. Check that the steering input matches the wheels.
I would start with the steering wheel and work inward without removing the tank just yet. When you turn the wheel in the driveway/garage, how do the wheels and tires react? Instantaneous with no hesitation? Under the dash there are two u-joints with 12mm (and 13 I believe) fasteners. Are they tight with no shaft slippage? That's about all you can check there unless you pull the tank. The only thing suspect under the tank is the rubber coupler. It has lock tabs under the M8 fasteners and shouldn't be loose but, someone's been in most areas on most of these cars and it may eventually warrant a check.
Back outside. What type of struts? Pinch bolt or through pin? If pinch bolt (while I preach this is very rare) this sounds "very" similar to the issue people have when the bottom of the strut is ovaled out. I think that would be my #1 look-see...
The steering rack is very strong and rarely wears out. I've been autocrossing my for 30 years on slicks and the rack/car had 130K street miles on it when I started racing it. It's still fine today. Loose or worn items in the steering system would make the steering slow. Ricks describes his steering as quick. RickS needs to weigh in on the comments here to help us figure out the problem.
