Ok, I'll chime in too. I have always thought that the 911 six was the ultimate and that is what I bought 25 years ago - a 1973 911T. It has been a marvelous car, and still has the original factory paint. Just fantastic. I always thought of the 912 as a lesser car.
Then my daughter, 18, asked if we could do a 912 project together before she went off to college. So, I got a 1967 SWB 912 and we restored it. The car is SOOO much nicer than I ever expected. I love the SWB, the purest lines, the green gauges, the push button door openers - and mostly the jewel of an engine. Yes, it is not a flat six and it doesn't have the torque, power or sound of the 911. But, it IS the ultimate in the development of the 356 engine - the engine that made the company famous (with the body that made it an icon). I think of it sort of as a hybrid - driving a 356 and an early 911 at the same time.
But, admittedly, then I get in my 911 and I LOVE that car even more. The truth is that my favorite car is the one I am driving then.
And one other thing, my father just passed away with a Sunbeam Tiger in the garage that he hasn't driven for years. I kept telling him to get out and drive it to the ground before he was in the ground. So, I'm afraid my mentality has changed somewhat. If some guy wants to keep driving a SWB SWT and do it with the wonderful 356 engine, hey I'm all for it. If the car is still viable later, the next guy can put a 911 engine back in!
