    Thoughts: original Glaverbel lightweight windshield

I have an original windshield on my car.

It makes me nervous to drive it, as I am told it is the only original surviving one. They all broke during the early years.

I am tempted to remove it and store it, so I can drive with peace of mind with a replica. I don't want to break the last one, yet I want to drive.

It belongs on an all original RS that is basically only used for show. Or in the Porsche museum. Or sitting in a box, which seems a waste.

Any thoughts on this? Basically it is priceless.

Here's one perspective below from a different thread I responded to:

I only see 1 in my life.....it's very very very easy to broke it, you only need a little stone on the windshield!

You could 3m clear bra it, to protect it.
You would risk breaking it on removal!

It was removed and reinstalled during restoration, by a real pro. So it can be done.
    Either way I risk breakage.

This may very well be the last one out there. The Porsche museum needs it.

If you want to use the car remove it immediately....and be very very careful doing this!!
If your car stays in the garage 364/365 days in a year you can't do it.

it's possible to post some photo?
    thanks!

I have a friend with a Rs Light with original Glaverbel Windshield....and he did some track days in the early days, it's amazing that he never broke it in 40years that he use the car (yes, it's the first and unique owner)

it's the only one original Glaverbell Windshield I see in my life in person!

So there are at least two surviving?

    Any others?

It's easy to remove the windshield without risk. You just sacrifice the seal. Use a box cutter on the inner lip. I think the notion of safe storage makes some sense, but you have to consider two things: one, you need to carefully support the curve of the glass wherever you store it (face down is preferred), and protect it from things falling on it. two: you will risk breakage when you reinstall.

So, although it seems a good precaution to remove it, it seems to be pretty safe where it is now, and maybe only somewhat safer removed.

This might be the only time I agree with you.

Our good mutual friend in CA was watching over a fantastic condition IT Carrera. Low and behold this one also has a Glaverbel windshield. Never seen on before. Interesting to me the manufacturer's mark is in the lower right corner unlike Sigla and Sekurit.

I understand your dilemma. Maybe check out the product listed above as a way to protect the glass and keep it in the car. If not then I would probably take it out and store it. Can you see out it very well? I have a very old Sigla windshield in my car and when driving into the sun it is quite a challenge to see out of.
