What is it about the guys in the 80's taking every longhood and making it into a big red wide body. I did a three car deal this week that had not one, but two of these!
I curse you guys in the 80's who had no respect for a longhood!

it was kind of like the "patina" craze of today.... i had a neighbor with a perfect dark burnt red 1975 911S.... he kept begging me to turbo flair it and paint it guards red. this was in the early eighties.... i hated the looks of the car/compared to what it was... im not a race guy, so mud flaps and gizmos realy dont do it for me.... i did not totally get away from the "guards red pandemic" i got a 1966 9/12 for free and was going to build it for a quick sale.... so.... i painted it guard red (it was sand beige).... but that was in the eighties and i still have that same 9/12.... long story but that car has brought me at least 20k on top of the car...
I sometimes wonder how the “I got lost on the way to the racetrack” look so prevalent today will be looked upon in years to come. I like sport purpose and rennsport on cars for motorsport or original factory product of that type ...but is there a point when it becomes the fashionable thing to do that folks follow.
Is there a point when so often done by so many it ceases to show much originality but rather following the trend. I’m no arbiter of fashion and don’t know. There are without doubt some great cars done in the style but I sometimes wonder what will be made of it just like we have views of the 70s and 80s trends on these Mr Potato head easy to swap and change bits cars.
Magnus Walker putting signature touches to jeans to jazz them up then doing similar trick by appropriating sporting touches to 911...shudder.
Singer appropriating rennsport ans sporting purpose and building a caricature (without being closed down by the factory) rather than making his own car.. no thanks
Each to their own but who knows what will be made of the trend in decades to come?

JUST A THOUGHT.
Maybe there is a reason why we love true 'longhoods"?
Not like they are rare, really??
Just fun cars and people have always enjoyed making the old 'newer' and now the altered 'older'
Reverse EVOLUTION for the better I recon.
50 years of making many Silk Purse's into a Sow's ear's and now the time comes that we now weave them all back together again.
This is why we have this Forum.

I bought my car in 1985. I remember being really excited about buying one of those kits to update the rear end of my car with one of the new “Porsche” reflectors. Thank goodness I couldn’t afford to do it.

Great post Steve; succinct and on the money. Singer isn't even a Porsche but someone's fantasy best suited to carrying golf clubs. No offense to golf. I guess it was only a matter of time until Porsche became another 'vehicle' for the poseur.

Isn't that exactly what the 'Guards Red Turbo Tail' is?
The Wall Street/City of London bonus-mobile of the late '80s and early '90s?
I thought that's why so many tired old cars were given a new lease of life as it allowed their owners the opportunity to capitalise on the image of abundant success... the car equivalent of cosmetic-surgery to fool people!

What are the original identities of these two cars?
