    Radar Detector

Does anyone use a Radar Detector in their early 911??
I'm in California and they are Legal but can not be attached to the windshield.
Where is a good place to fix it? I have never had one . Are they worth the cost?
    Any brand better then others.
    Thanks
    Bob

Valentine 1 is accepted as a leader...check out install threads over on Pelican Parts...lots of innovative ideas. V1 makes a neat remote unit that is very slick and easy to install.

valentine 1, none better. I use it in my 911's, thousands of miles logged in CA, never a problem. I hardwire, run the wire under the rubber gasket, and place the V1 directly over or under the rear view mirror, the newer cars have a tinted band up there, so the detector isn't obvious to oncoming traffic.

I've been using a Valentine 1 for ever....

However until this thread I did NOT know that they were illegal attached to the windshield....

    I just read the law.........

In the Porsche I attach mine just above the surface of the dash so it's scanning through the wipers...

Seeing my one detector goes in all four cars I own... I'm kind'a stuck.......

there are some guys who make some various adapters that attach a V1 to a rear view mirror, that would satisfy the letter of the law

Valentine 1 is the best. I mount mine on suction cups just below the rear view mirror. I think it is still legal here in Texas, of course we have open carry here too, so we might be an exception!.
I know that they are illegal in some states like NC,Virginia.

google "valentine mirror mount" you get all kinds of good stuff.

NC is fine, VA, and DC won't allow detectors. CT used to have the law, it was repealed many years ago.

CA and MN won't allow you to mount one to the windshield.

I concur on the Valentine's. Best money can buy.

Installation is really only limited to your imagination, the skill of your installer, and your budget. Here's a shot of the mirror in my Aston Martin. I've done this in several of my cars.

V1 is the best, functionally. If you have the remote readout, you can put the unit on the parcel shelf as well ad put the readout in the dash somewhere, or on the steering column cover in front of the gauges. I used to do this in my old Saab 900, with the main unit hidden in a box of tissues on the parcel shelf. If you live in a place where they are illegal you need a Beltronics STiR Plus or the Escort Redline equivalent (should you chose to violate the law...). More expensive, but more hidden mounting options as well.

They are illegal in Ontario and so far (20 years !) I have resisted the urge to buy a RD. I just keep my eye peeled and my Spidey senses tingling.

This company does the very best remote detector integration in rear view mirrors. http://www.radar-mirror.com/Store_Bel_Mirrors.html
It works in thick modern car mirrors, but may not work in an early car.

I do not recommend Radar-Mirror.com. Their generic mirrors are crap and even their oem-mirror installs are less than impressive. I ordered one for a BMW and sent it right back. That's the factory mirror in my post above after being modified by my installer. And no need to downgrade to the Beltronics or Escort "hidden" detectors. A good installer can disassemble your V1 and hide it perfectly. In the car above, the sensors are in the headliner with the controls under the dash but I've also done them under dash cowls, in targa bars, etc.
