    Volkswagen Golf Mk VI Discounts

Youngest daughter needs wheels and I've been looking around. She attends college out of state and needs something safe and reliable, so I've been trolling the bottom of the new car market looking for a car with a warranty. Interestingly the good pre-owned stuff seems to be in high demand and almost as expensive in the current market. After looking at the crash tests, the Ford Fiesta, Honda Fit, Nissan Versa Note, etc. scare the cr*p out of me. VW Golf is nice but expensive...

BUT, the new Golf Mk VII is now in production, and VW is offering significant discounts on the outgoing Mk VI. I'm finding $3100-$3400 off MSRP. I hadn't previously driven the Mk VI; it turns out to be an amazing car, seemingly designed from the inside out. My commute is a 66-mile round trip. I found that the 2014 Golf Mk VI is equal or better in performance, equipment, refinement, and comfort to the 2013 BMW 328i that I recently had as a loaner for a week. The only knock that I can make on the car is that the 172 hp/177 lb.ft. 2.5-liter I-5 with 6-sp Tiptronic combo is a bit short on mpg compared to the newer competition (the Golf Mk VII will go to a turbo-4), but I have no complaint about the power in a 2900 pound machine. The chassis is excellent, even on the base car's 15-inch wheels. I especially like the standard cloth sport seats with height and lumbar adjustments. U.S. market Golf VI's are German-assembled, and the build quality appears to be superb.

A premium car for just a couple grand more than the sardine cans. Needless to say, I wrote the check. Daughter is ecstatic.

If you're in the market, check out the Golf Mk VI before they're gone (that's the new Mk VII in the background).

Love VWs. Bought a TDI Passat SEL.

They are in very difficult straits in the US w/ no one buying their cars. Waiting for them to get desperate and sell me the Touareg "R" for the LB price I offered them. It has been sitting on the lot for 4 months.

The lease is up on my wife's Jetta Sportwagen in August, it's been a very nice car. I'm thinking of buying it off lease for a very good price, but I might see what sort of deals they are offering for a '14. VW seems to have some great incentives when they are trying to get cars on the road.

'14 Jetta Sportwagon TDI 6MT for the Mrs. and '12 Golf TDI DSG with 18-inch wheels for me (interesting story behind that), now that I'm commuting regularly. Great car. Very sporty, though the suspension could use some sorting (don't they all?).

I get 40 MPG average per TANK and have seen over 44 MPG zipping around the Green Mountains.
