Thread: I found a 68s engine

    I found a 68s engine-UPDATE

Greetings everyone. Admittedly I'm a newcomer to this forum, but have been active on the bird board for many years with the same SN.

Long story short, I pulled the engine from my factory 914-6 and learned that it wasn't the original engine, rather an engine from a 1968s. I've included photos below. Knowing the rarity of these engines I'm weighing the option of getting rid of it in hopes reuniting it with a 68s.

Is there a registry or anything out there that can help try to mate the engine with it's original car in the event I do decide to let go of the engine?

    serial 4080519
    type 901-02
    build 11391

I believe there is one fellow here who has been successful deriving the VIN from the engine #. But this is a nice aluminum case, and should be worth a fair bit.

Thanks for recording these details. It would be cool if we could track this down to the vin.

Ben, don't be shy about that honey of a 914/6 that you have. Perhaps you could email me more info about it for my database.

I do plan on pulling the valve covers to see if I can determine if the cams are original and will put a boroscope into the cylinders to see if the pistons look correct.

I pulled the valve covers to try to see the part numbers on the cams. Here is what I found:

    Left cam: 901.105.109.01
    Right Side: 901.105.110.01

Based on what I've found the cams are 1965 solexes?

I tried to check the piston top shape to determine type but I couldn't nail down a definitive shape.

How does this I for action impact the valuation?
