    Some Rust

    I'm getting the rust taken car of on my 73.5. Ok - most of the rust. Keep in mind that this is really a good solid car but it is an early 911. I had a new owner tell me last night that he just bought an early 911 barn find that has no rust. My comment was "You just haven't found it yet."

    This was caused by a rear window seal that dried out and allowed water to drip into the back seat area. I'm getting the rear shelf done as well as this seat area. We're going to use panels from Restoration Design to start the process. There's still a lot of fitting, cutting and welding that has to be done with these panels. Restoration Design must be a good product though because I heard no complaints about the quality of the rear shelf. This shop has done a lot of work for the Collier Collection so they understand perfect.

    This is affecting about 80% of coupes I see, even from the Southwest. The interior sound pad and exterior coating conceal it, but an icepick will find the truth quickly.

    If you have a leaking window seal the sound pads will conceal the problem. They get soaked and hold the water against the sheet metal. Keep in mind that just washing your car can cause this problem. Once the water gets past the seal it just stays there forever. Notice that my car only rusted on the left side. That means the seal was the issue - not road salt or anything like that.

    Maybe we shouldn't wash our long hoods?

    thats one of the few areas were comparable (central+northern) euro cars are not this ,much affected as us cars...temperature is lower in average so the seals do not get this brittle and .i also think US cars have different inlulation material that keeps the water for long time.

    have seen this rust issue very often on very solid us cars that came back to europe

    I don't! Wish all of the waterless car wash products out there, I found that I really don't need to. However, I don't get the cars very dirty too often but once a year or so I do wash with water because there is too much mud all over! I do let the cars dry very well afterwards.

    The Restoration Design panels are pretty good. One thing people usually don't mention is how all these little brackets have to be removed from the original panel and then placed in the same exact location on the new panel.

    I'm going to use sound deadener in the car as it goes back together. The days of being a semi-hot rod are over for the car. I think I might enjoy the quiet. I know my wife will.

    I'm probably going to use Tony for the carpeting. Anyone have any other thoughts? I'm going original. Whatever that means.

    BITD we could always spot a rusty car driven in Denver. At the time, '60s '70s, there were very few storm drains in Denver metro area. The city fathers saw to it that rain water and snow melt ran down the streets to be carried away by extremely crowned roads. So your left side could be bone dry and your right hub deep due to the crowned roads. The water in the gutters could stay long after the storm. Many early Porsches and VWs I checked out had this pattern of right side only rust. I spent my college years in the Denver/Boulder area. More fun rust facts.

    I never put water on my car to wash it. There are tons of clean and wipe products out there...
