This is a really interesting question. The tag is most likely an OEM reference to a spec for an oil for limited slip differentials. The question is, can you match it to a modern oil.

I did some research and found one potentially useful document. In it, you'll find a cross-reference between the code S-1747A (although it bugs me that the D is missing) and Spirax ST 80W-140 (a Shell product)...

Spirax ST 80W-140 would be a good heavy duty gear oil for this application but a) I don't think it's still available today and b) I'm not positive that it is for limited slip applications...

I'll have to check further next week when I can access more of my reference materials.

Looked a little further...I would expect that Shell Spirax® S2 ALS would do the trick...

I'll complete my study next week.

I've seen these on 914, 911 and 915 Mag gearboxes. Not on early ALU boxes. Very soft material, mounting hole blows out first use. I bought 10 from Emory many years ago but used them all up. I thought I saved one but can't find it. Gled

Assuming David takes this one, I would be interested if anyone else has another one available.

    Thanks
