Connecting speedo cable to angle drive ('67)

Getting ready to install drivetrain (at long last) with this question:
Is the speedo drive installed before or after engine/tranny install?
I ask because the large nut at the trans end of speedo cable doesn't turn…is it supposed to? Thanks

The angle drive is installed in the trans before installation in the car. (it can be CHANGED in the car by removing the trans mount) Once the trans is in place the speedo cable is screwed onto the angle drive. So yes, the nut at the end of the cable must be free to turn.
