The shaft that disappeared in the 915 gearbox

Whilst driving my hotrod 911 I heard a loud noise. Oil started leaking out of my newly revised gearbox. The problem came from the opening where the mechanical speedometer cable goes in. We removed the cable and saw that the shaft (or axle) that's supposed to be in there was missing. But it could not have fallen out and before the noise the speedo workerd just fine. Has anybody ever experienced that it disappears in the box? And: can I remove the snout without completely taking out the engine?

    Thanks!

    Erik

I have never tried to disassemble a trans in the car but the speedo axle has gone inside the trans cover. There is a really small snap ring under the seal that retains the axle, still available from Porsche, that is easy to tweak and or break causing speedo part to fall out. Under the snap ring is a thrust washer with a flat in the inside diameter of the washer that indexes on a flat on the speedo axle. Sounds like it all came apart. That axle and the one inside the cover are a pair in ether 7:31 or 8:31 ratios. Gled
