    color 1965 engine lid

    Good afternoon,
can anyone please help me regarding the correct color/paint schema of the engine lid under the grill on a 1965 Porsche 912? I have been referred to this site by a member of the 912 BBS who thought that the members of the 911 registry have more extensive knowledge regarding this subject matter;he thought that the paint schema changed with the years. Sometimes the middle bar and left/right sides under the grill are either completely black or have the same color as the car. It is all a little confusing because when I looked at another homepage of a dutchman where the first few real 901 are registered, I saw pictures where everything under the grill was painted black and also pictures where the bar and sides where left in the car's color. The same is true when looking at pictures of high end restorations of only 1965 Porsche 911, sometimes completely black, sometimes the bar and sides in car color-the paint schema almost looks randomly selected by the restorers.
Thank you in advance for any help.
    Regards.

This is sort of a tricky item to search for, but here is a start:

Essentially it seems a lot of restorers get this detail wrong; it should be matt black under the grille.

My '67 is black under the grill - know it's correct. I've heard that this is done on '66 and '67 cars, but maybe not all. Some darker color cars were left body color there, and many people have noted that it depends on which factory the car was made in. i'm not sure about any of this, just my $ .02.

In the porsche museum I believe I have seen a slate grey car 1965 that is not black under the grill. Could it be dependent on the color? Light colors are black under the grill otherwise the color distorts the view too much? But then again, Bahama yellow is not dark......

Many thanks for all the valuable comments from the forum members, that really helped me in regard to attention to detail and authentic looks. I will have my 1965 car painted black under the grill including the middle bar and the sides.
    Regards.
    Stefan
