SWB with 3.0 engine - Oil tank options

    Hi all

I have a SWB car and a 3.0 engine that im looking at installing. I dont currently have an oil tank and am just researching what I can do. Ultimately I would like to go back to a 2.0 but only really want to buy one tank. So my question.... will the 2.0 oil tank work with a 3.0 engine? This might be a dumb question but id rather find out this way than blowing up my engine!

If I go to the LWB tank I know I will need to change sheet metal for the tank as well.

    Cheers

do you mean you don't have an oil cooler? I've just fitted a 3.0 SC engine to my 70T and used the standard oil tank. I had to fit a 26 to 30mm adapter from elephant racing to fit the hoses to the external thermostat. Easy to do if you have all the right parts.

The only SWB that doesn't have an oil tank is a 912.

If on the other hand you are asking whether your 2,0 six cylinder car can accomodate a 3,0 with the same oil tank, the answer is yes. However, the oil cooler on the 3,0 cars has an aluminum pipe with a rolled bead, and the "s" hose uses a clamp over the bead to retain the hose. Same story at the later tank. So you will have to use an early oil cooler with the threaded M26 fitting for the "S" hose to make it work with the early tank.

I don't recommend cutting the firewall to accomodate a later tank-- the later tanks have the filler ahead of the filter vs. behind for the earlier ones-- so you have to enlarge the hole to make this work (look at an SC starboard rear firewall to see what I mean, it's a large oval hole). If you use a 69-71 tank you can have it baffled for increased capacity.

There is a difference between the SWB tanks and the first LWB tanks - the filter and filler consoles are the same as is the sheet metal and the tanks initially appear to be the same, but for some reason (I think it's the bumper support arm) the tanks are NOT interchangeable.

Andy, if I'm reading your question correctly - I think you can stick with the SWB tanks that belongs in the chassis, but you may have some plumbing considerations/alterations.

Thanks John. I think you are right, ill stick with the early tank and make the adjustments. I guess my concern was do they hold the same volume and will it be ok for a 3.0
