Anyone shipped a bare engine case lately?

I've found a guy with an engine case three numbers off the correct one for my car.

Problem is he's been quoted around $700 to ship via UPS and USPS wont ship because of the box size. I suspect he has double boxed it as the dimensions are 24" x 16" x 16 with a weight of 44 pounds.

Has anyone done this recently and can give an idea of how to do it without the cost being exhorbitant?

    Thanks

    Cam

Try shipping the case in two containers via USPS and pull the studs to shrink the cube.

I haven't shipped a engine case recently but I just shipped a scheel seat that was 60in. on it's longest end and over 40lbs. And it was only $53 dollars with greyhound from NC to OH. Greyhound is the cheapest way to ship large and heavy items IMHO.

He needs to ship via a freight handler. It will take longer and end up in a container. Frankly I'm surprised it is too big for USPS. I shipped several early 911 dashes between US and Canada in a 6 foot Sonotube. Maybe to Oz the rules change.

Corporate (negotiated) rates for Fed Ex and UPS are a lot cheaper (40-60% discounts). If he has (or signs up for an account) he will get a discount. Or use a corporate account and reimburse your (or his) employer if permitted.

Couple months ago shipped a 3.6 engine case from Canada to USA via FedEx ground. Caveat was all studs, front and rear and head studs were removed, then it fit nicely in a plastic storage tote with some padding and away it went. I think the cost was ~$125.
