Interesting find on the ashtray holding mechanism... Tartan design!!!

As I am stripping and rebuilding the dash components of my car, I took out the holding mechanism for the ashtray, just to clean it up and lube the little plastic wheels... stuck on the top of the thing was this piece of paper with a strong red tartan design... I have looked at one of the 911 interior books I have, but it is for 1970 onwards cars, so not really helpful, but I wondered if that tartan design was available in 1966, and, if so, whether a piece of printed paper was standard fitment in the factory?

    Any ideas gratefully received!

    Cheers

I've seen all sorts of little anomalies such as this over the years. Tiny pieces of carpet scraps used under the rear hat shelf, strange date markings, etc. When we visited the factory I was told that some of these things were from factory workers, working on their own ideas, or passing idol time. This is why early Porsches are so special, they were mostly hand built by craftsman, and no two are exactly alike.

I think that is the trade dress of the Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing company (3M) who supplied the anti-rattle pad that was fitted to the ashtrays. Probably the end of a roll of the stuff.
