    Back Date a 1979 SC

I am looking for referrals to do a back date of my 1979 SC to and ST car- let me eliminate Flat 6 he is busy. I am in the midwest - near Detroit and I am looking for a body shop who can do the chassis work. This would be the flares, the front and strip and paint the chassis.
Anyone have recommendations? Do you have those I should avoid?
I hope the collective wisdom can help me here- I would travel about 600 miles from home to- but not CA or West Coast
    Many thanks to all

Give Scott McKowen a call and talk to him about what you are looking to have done. His work is absolutely first rate quality, at more than fair prices and he is completely trustworthy. His shop is in Newark, Delaware. Here is his site:

I can give you more details if you message me. I just received my back date build from Scott about a week ago and absolutely love it so far.

Or leave it stock and watch it appreciate. '78-'79 are unique to the series.

    Good luck either way.

You might try aase, I know they do restoration work so they may be up for it. They are down in Columbus so not that far from you.

thanks to all... I will start a thread soon as I start to move along. I am also trying to sort the motor-- do I do a large 3.8 or a smaller set up?
I have no motor or trans in the car now- I want a resto mod- but correct to the time- no coil overs -- I never liked the rubber bumpers either.

Just my 2 cents: I've backdated an 83SC, all by myself (well with a good friend, I mean no shop). Know what you want to get out of this before you hack an SC which will soon be just as collectible as a long hood.
The resulting car will undoubtedly look cool, be a bit faster, etc....but it will *NOT* feel or drive like a long hood... I can't quite explain why, suspension geometry, less chassis flex, steering... I don't know... All I can tell you is it'll feel exactly like the SC used to feel, vaguely lighter (doubt you'll notice). I'm not the only one to feel that way either... It's very noticeable if you have one of each and drive them back to back... The SC just feels more solid, but it hasn't got that early car vibe... Off my soapbox now ;-) Good luck !

Agreed, have 73 which I'm selling and a 993 which I just traded for a 78 that I had planned to backdate.when I drove the 78 after the 993 it seemed so primitive, loud and old, then I got the 73 back and started driving it for a couple of weeks, very cool feel and exactly the way an early car should feel, now driving the 78 it seems so different, the clutch is not near as stiff as the 73 it doesn't seem as loud, feels more modern and heavy, just not the same, not worse just different.
If it's the look you are after then I don't blame you but it will never feel the same so big decision.good luck

I had/improved one from a 3.2 1983, I do have tons of advises depending on the level of backdate you wish to achieve.
There are plug and play FBG kits to full backdate including the engine (which I just start to do for a friend of mine)
