    You are not wrong. The book indicates that it is a 70 E engine, as you read. That is a crock of "you know what", though. That book is full of nonsense. 911 engine numbers are the easiest thing in the Porsche world to decipher and the author got it wrong! 911 engine numbers made between 69 and 73 are very simple. Look at the chart below. Every 911 engine starts with a 6, the next number is either a 1, 2, or 3. 1 is a T, 2 is an E and 3 is an S. the 3rd number is the year. How simple is that? The next 4 numbers are the sequential number. There is no way to tell what type of body (Coupe or Targa) an engine came from by the engine serial number. Yes, the sequential number will identify whether the engine was mated to a Sportomatic or a manual transmission, but that is not an issue here.
