    Where were you in 1976?

Found this almost forgotten photo not long ago so it might be fun to post it here.

In 1976 I was in the parking lot at the Daytona 24 hrs getting my photo taken with some 911's which I did not own. At the time I was 24 yrs old and driving a 356B beater on the street and racing a 1968 Triumph Spitfire M.III in SCCA FP. Remember that this was an era when 911 owners where barely willing to even talk to 356 or 914 owners. Also check out the corduroy bell bottoms, easy rider sun glasses and shoulder length hair. 1976 was da bomb. Oh to be young again. As far as the race was concerned, John Greenwood in the big block "batmobile" Corvette lead for the first few hours until to nobody's surprise blowing up. In the end a BMW 3.5 CSL won followed by a bunch of Carrera RSR's and the NART Ferrari Daytona.

Chicago, IL. My wife and I were celebrating our first wedding anniversary in '76. I was 24 and she was 21. We barely had two nickels to rub together. She drove a '68 Olds Delta 88 Coupe, and I had a '68 Chevy Biscayne Coupe. Got them both used, with high mileage, I think I paid $300 for each of them. My first venture into sports cars was the following year when we bought our first new car....a '77 Silver on Black Honda Accord 2 door hatchback. What a difference compared to the '60's full sized American sleds we were accustomed to driving previously.

Many years (and vehicles) later, once our kids finished their educations and had started their careers, I bought Rudy, my first 911.

I was a sophomore in high school. It would be 9 years before I would buy my '72 S. I had this at the time (actually I bought it in 1977)...

Nah, just poor. Never did buy my 911 despite always wanting one, but British classics always kept getting in the way. Owned a shipload of British cars over the years. Came close a couple of times to purchasing a 911 but another Brit would show up instead. Always thought that sooner or later I'd pick up a 911 but looking at today's prices I'm now out of the loop.

I was in Sandy Hook, NJ watching the tall ships going into New York harbor for the bicentennial. My 72 911 was with me. We were camping because of the dire predictions of gridlock on the hiways

I remember that. Never saw the tall ships myself but my cousin was also living in NJ and watched the tall ships cruise by her apartment building from the balcony.

Well my best buddy (who posts here regularly) and partner in a Triumph TR8 historic race car project we're building up has a 65 and a 94 RSA which he lets me drive. That way I get my cake and eat it too.
