1965 aluwood steering wheel: butterfly or hockeypuck

Can anyone tell me what the right horn button would be for a 1965 car? I see both, cars with the butterfly and with only the hockey puck, seemingly presented as authentic to 1965 cars. Would it be a variation connected to aluwood/ironwood/plastic rim wheels, or maybe confusion between MY 65 and mfg year 65? Not sure whether these would define the difference, or was it just another option for buyer to choose?

My guess is, most wood wheels on a 1965 came with a butterfly.

Great question. I wish I knew for sure, hopefully someone who doess can chime in.

From all the pictures, new and vintage from brochures, it looks like the hockey puck was supplied, not the bat wing for 1965MY cars.

My 65 911, Chassis 1700 series VIN came with hockey puck horn button fitted to "aluwood" steering wheel. But Brian Long's Book on 63-71 911 (pg. 50) shows same wheel mounted with butterfly horn button. The photo is of the period....

I too have an early Jan. '65 911 that came wood/alu wood and with button only. I have seen them both ways. However I think the early '65's had the button only. Batwings came in a little later. Either way works. I would say 1st 1000 cars had button only.
    Personal preference in my opinion.

My '65 was delivered with a "horn ring" attached to its extended hub alloy wheel, and as verified and listed specifically on the rare build sheet I have for the car. Your Kardex might reveal if this option was ordered originally......but it seems the horn ring might have been an optional extra on early cars before wholesale replacing the "puck" as you fellas call it.

1965 912, 451326, delivered in US spec at the factory in August 1965, came with a plastic wheel and no butterfly. Have a Nardi wood-rim on it now but should maybe put it back bare-bones stock, along with the 4-1/2" steel wheels and 165x15s!

Not necessarily. It might depend how late in MY 1965.

In the 911x 911 book there is a factory picture, MY 1965 (kneepad), SR switch (nice detail), alu wood wheel w/ butterfly. Don't know the VIN of the car.

My belief is that in Model Year 1965, 911s had the "hockey puck" style horn button. A September 1965 (i.e. 1966 Model Year) accessories list includes # 9266, the "butterfly" horn which was by then standard on the 911 and optional on the 912.

However, the "Red 911" brochure of March 1965 (1965 Model Year) shows the aluminum and wood steering wheel with the "hockey puck" style horn button.

My 911, chassis # 301382 (1965 Model Year--delivered 21 June 1965) came to me with a steel and wood steering wheel and a "hockey puck" style horn button. It seems unlikely the previous owners would have substituted one relatively rare wood steering wheel for another, so I'm fairly confident it's original to the car.
