    Dansk Heat Exchangers

Can anybody tell me if these are any good? I've posted a want add looking for some used SSIs but since they appear to be pretty hard to find in used condition I may need to buy a new set. The Bird sells dansk steel replacements for about $600 each which seems like a good price but I wonder if they'll fit and work as original or if Ill have to beat them into submission / re-weld them to make work. Thanks for any input.

I just installed a new set on my 73S engine and they fit perfectly. When I purchased the car, it came with a set of still-in-the box DANSK units from circa 1992, but it turned out they were not for an MFI car hence my purchase of a new set. I too have heard some stories of later produced units not being up to the same quality or fit as in the past, but there was no visible difference or fit issues from the new set or that 1992 circa set.

I've used several sets of Dansk now (all you can get of course) and while there seems to be an overall different feel to them, and likely different alloy, they have fit just fine. One advantage over SSI for us 72 and 73 owners is that the Dansk have the correct preheat box for the air intake, SSI's didn't have that.

I have SSIs and want to get the proper pre-heat box on the left side to be "factory original". I see sellers claiming they have "OEM" heat exchangers. Is everything Dansk now, including what Porsche sells? How do the compare to the originals?

Don't know what is available thru Porsche, might just be mild steel made by DANSK! I don't know who the OEM builder was in the seventies?? Dansk may be the ONLY supplier now!! Maybe available in mild or stainless ?

    Gents,

Thanks for the replies, I appreciate it. I'm going to look into cleaning mine up (doubtful) or just buying a pair if Dansk I think. Ill keep looking for a used set of SSIs but will have to do something in the next few months since I'm moving to place that gets pretty cold so my '71T heating system needs a rebuild. Thanks again,

Just put Dansks on my '67. Flange thickness is different than OEM, but no fitment problems. Actually fit very well, and feel quite sturdy. Pleased so far.

Other than the flanges, how close are the Dansks to OEM?

Cliff...makes sense...I used the DANSK boxes that my replacement came in, but you are right, the one's I sold you were the SSIs as your note reminded me.
