Thread: rear panel shelf

    rear panel shelf

    Good afternoon,

can someone please tell me if the gap seen on the picture between the rear panel shelf and the rear window rubber seal is normal? The rear window was taken out in order to have the car painted and I can't remember if it was like this before or if the rear panel shelf "dropped" a little bit in the process of re-installing the rear window.

Thanks for any help in advance.

    Regards.

    Stefan

My car has a circular-section rubber strip that extends below the rubber seal for the width of the window...

I don't think that's normal, but my car's rear shelf is like that too.

I think what your talking about, the space between the window seal and the shelf cover. The reinforcement is exposed because, I beleave that a section of headliner is supposed to be glued under the window seal and tucked under the package tray cover. At least that's the way it is on my 71 and 73.

Check to see if someone removed the insulation under the rear deck vinyl piece. If so, that would set the vinyl piece lower and consequently expose the sheet metal.

When I removed my origional trim additionally to the sound insulation sheet attached to the metal, there was a strip of foam attached to the back of the shelf running across the back to lift the trim to the window line.

It is a low density foam strip, about 1x1 inch in original uncompressed form, running under the bottom edge of the parcel shelf insert. I had a picture somewhere, but can't find it at the moment.

    EDIT. Found it.

There is a round piece of foam, think foam backer rod for insulation, that sits and fills the gap at least on SWB cars. I have used black fuel line as a substitute. It seems that recently I saw a current part being produced, perhaps Stoddard?

    Edit:

The part is called: Seal for rear storage panel 901.555.751.20 from an old parts book. It is number 82 in the photo.

Many thanks for all the valuable comments. Does that mean that the shelf has the correct height and the foam is visible directly under the window rubber seal or is the foam not visible and the shelf must be lifted a bit until it reaches the bottom of the window rubber seal so that the gap is not visible anymore ?
    Regards.

The piece fills the gap where your arrow is in the first post. It does not go under the parcel shelf to lift it up. Think of it as a visible trim piece.
