700 mile weekend trip in Country NSW (New South Wales), Australia

Hi. It's good to get out into the country.
I signed on for a bushwalking course (with the Scouts), not reading the form properly. When the details came through, i realised it was a 350 mile trip each way.
After the "oh well, i'll cancel…" thoughts, i came to my senses - opportunity for a road trip ! So took friday off, and left early

Very easy driving. Long empty roads.
I did have a 'discussion' with 3 police officers who 'thought' i was speeding
They didn't appear to have a radar gun, said i 'might' get a ticket in the post …. but i await to see what happens. :roll eyes: ?!

Where i'm going to is called the evocatively named: Warrumbungles National Park !

We've had bad bush fires in a lot of East Coast Australia, so much of the forest (especially in this park) is burned out. This was 2 years ago.

Camping was interesting. The first night was 'ok' in the tent (i had a stretcher and extra blankets), though the next night was up the mountain … carrying everything …
I'm guessing those in South Cal (including my ex-US car !) haven't scraped ice off the windscreen much before (and the light really showed the colour mis-match on the front wing/fender !!)
Sides of the tent were ice - crazy !!





(ps why is it …. that when there's a huge campsite that's empty (for obvious reasons given above) … some idiot in a red UTE (Aussie word) comes and camps … and snores … right NEXT TO YOU ????????)

Look at the sunrise anyway - wow !!
(tent didn't defrost properly before i had to pack it in my rucksack … so was dripping for half a day !!)

Apparently one of the best day walks in the state.
Lots of volcanic spires, heaps of wildflowers, and (from a distance) even saw a couple of eagles

The Breadknife is a 90metre high rock wall, (in geological terms known as a dyke !), formed when volcanic matter (igneous rock, i think) is forced through a fault in the earth's surface.
(we didn't climb this bit obviously !!)



Nothing beats a good log fire
(plenty of part-burned wood around after the bush fires …. !)

Driving back on sunday.

These things are the most dangerous things around ….

Kangaroos.
They are EVERYWHERE up there. It's OK in the day time, but at night they are lethal.
Not having the greatest intelligence, they head for the main beams. So driving during dusk and beyond is seriously concerning.
They cause a number of deaths, when a huge lump gets hit, it can destroy a vehicle, but can then go through the windscreen, or cause the driver to come off the road.
In the bush, there are 'roo and other animals littered … at least every 1/2 mile up there …

Anyway, some stunning driving on the way home (being careful of the speed limit ….) ….ending up nearer home on an old favourite (of all the NSW people here), the Old Putty Road, from North to South.
What a weekend !

Car behaved wonderfully. It's now done 2000 miles on its completely restored engine and is marvellous !

And great to get out into the bush ….
I was surprised at how varied the countryside was … tried to show a few pictures.
Still very dry out there ...
