thanks for all the replies and PMs.

    Couple of follow ups:
    - speeding ticket arrived today $436 and 4 points …. (?!!) … i considered fighting it (have done previously) - but decided to pay and shut up !
    - dingos - i've never seen one (only lived here for 19 years !!). I believe they are common in the bush and further up North (Cam ?!), and often cross-breeds (with Alsatians etc )!
    - story with the car … I'd had my tangerine car for a year and a half or so, work was going well, and I just saw the ad in the PCA on-line site for a Conda Green - which i just loved. Good price, leaking engine (now rebuilt but it lasted 8 years), needed paint and minor repairs, but is a great original car. Seller was Jay (he was the guy selling the slate gray 66, with the German Officer sales history, that was in Excellence recently) and we had an easy transaction. Luckily i have a mate in LA so he picked it up and stored it til i next went over and shipped it. Here in Australia, we can register LHD cars - as long as they're over 30 years old (all to do with protecting local car industry, though that all ends by (or before most likely) 2016. (tiny market, not cost effective at all …). I guess i've missed the boat with my other favourite colour (Aubergine with tobacco interior ! - but never mind - maybe i'll backdate a 3.2 in the future !)
    - ice - yes - hard to believe ! Though the snow fields (yes- honest !) are having the best season in years. All right … don't laugh … they are "fine" (but i'd fly to New Zealand every time for closest snow !! ..)
    cheers for now

Great story and pictures Paul. Funny about the 'Ute' camping next to you, just like parking lots,,,,park way out at the empty far end of the lot, and when you come back there will a ratty pick-up truck parked on either side!!

Looks like a great trip Paul!

I too enjoy fighting tickets - especially when no instrument is used. Though arguing 3 on 1 is tough... At least write a few letters as every time they have to have a public servant respond to you it eats into the profits
