questions on setting voltage on SEV Marchal VR

I've acquired a SEV Marchal voltage regulator (goes with the Marchal alternator) for my 73.5T that works, but reads 14.8V at 4K rpms, which is too high. I've read all the threads I could find as well as the FWM but have a couple of questions. First, I've seen references to adjusting the set-point to various values, but nothing that I took as definitive. Does 14.0V seemed like a reasonable value? The car currently has a single lead-acid battery.

Second, what's the best way to adjust the spring tension, and by how much at a time (figuring I'll need to sneak up on it)? Would bending the lower spring mount work? Or would it be better to do something with the spring itself? I assume I can install the VR on the car with the can off so that I can adjust the voltage in situ until I get the set-point right (with the battery disconnected, of course).

Gently bend the lower arm till you get to the voltage you want. 13.8-14 should work well.

remembering back 50 years ago & adjusting VR on American cars. The voltage would change when the cover was put back in place. Is yours changing when you replace the cover?

    ESully, thanks for the info.

Tom, thanks, I'll keep an eye out for that phenomenon.
