    I agree with a ground strap...but the only problem is that I hesitate to remove the case nut to attach the ground strap to the case. The case is all together and torqued...would you think it would compromise the integrity of the case seal? After all there is a brown ground wire attached to the alternator that goes to earth somewhere.

    The case won't even know you did it, in fact one stud is always a few millimeters longer just to accommodate the extra thickness of the strap. Sounds like someone didn't put a strap on when it was last assembled?

    The reason for the thick strap is not an electrical ground, although it provides that function, as you say correctly there are other brown ground wires.

    The reason for the thick strap is a HEAT SINK.

    That is interesting. Mind if I ask where you heard this? The original ground wire on the '86 engine with internal VR I had was an insulated brown wire.
