    gearbox 8/65 question

I have a gearbox 8/65 with following codes
    901.301.101.02
    902/1
    220515

Can anybody tell me what kind of gearbox this is? Somebody said it has a LSD, how can I recognize that?

    66 911 and 912 5spd. I highly doubt it is equipped with a LSD.

    It is a 1965 912 5-speed transmission.

The 902/1 was not used in 1965 6-cylinder cars.
When used in 1966-67 911 models, the serial numbers were 130001-131571.

    Almost good

    Very late 1965 911's had 902/1 transmission.

    303021 (completed on 26.11.1965) had transmission 225429 902/1

I agree 220515 is most likely too early to have been used in a 911.

BTW facts like these (the use of the 902/1 in the 911 series in November 1965) make it very disputable to talk about model years in the 1965 - July 1966. There were so many chances / updates along the way.

Other q, when was the ZF LSD first available that you know?

    Richard,

Production of 1966 model cars began in July '65, according to Porsche, so a car completed in late Nov '65 would be a 1966 model. The transmission in question is definitely a '65 912 5-speed, but factory information on 66-67 transmissions is vague, especially with serial numbers. Can you post the COA or Kardex of the car you reference?

The ZF for early cars was the 904 differential, so was available when 901 production began. Early cars had Nadella axles, with unique axle flanges for the ZF differential. ZF flange bolts had 24mm hex heads, as opposed to 19mm hex heads for standard diff bolts. That is one quick way to tell if an early transmission has a ZF differential.

For what its worth, my 1966 911, build date 11 January 1966 had gearbox number 226 847/902/1 according to the Kardex.

I'll amend my comment above about 902/1 transmissions used in 1966-67 model cars...

When used in 1966 model cars, the serial numbers were in the 221700-238900 range.
When used in 1967 model cars, the serial numbers began at 130001.

    my chart for this trans

    902/1 from 220001 to 221721 912 ending 1965 07 26
    902/1 from 221722 to at least 232398 911 & 912 1966
    902/1 from 234001 to 238942 912 1967 5 speed
    902/1 from 130001 to 131571 911 1967 5 speed
    902/1 from 3280001 to 3281317 911 1968 5 speed

So only in 1966 was this trans shared between the 911 & 912 from the same serial range, otherwise each model had it's own serial range.
