Thread: Setting ride height

    Setting ride height

I am setting the rear ride height, all new spring plate bushing and know putting back together
When the spring plate is hanging free on the torsion bar, at what angle from level should it be at.
I want to lower it a bit so from that point how many teeth do I back it off.
I have heard 37degrees then back off two teeth. Would like to know for sure so I do not have to redo.
    Help

Don't worry, you will end up doing at least twice

You didn't say which car you have. My shop manual has a couple different settings for the radius arm for normal ride height. These figures are for the radius arm with the door sill level. If your door sill isn't level, add or subtract as necessary:

    911 & 911S (coupé & Targa) 36°
From ’68 on all 911s 39° (22 mm torsion bar diameter)
    912 (coupé & Targa) 33°
From ’68 on 912 36° (22 mm torsion bar diameter)
    From ’69 on all 911s 36° 30’ to 37° (23 mm torsion bar diameter)
    From ’69 on all 912s 33° 30’ to 34° (23 mm torsion bar diameter)

I only have the first set of shop manuals so if your ca's a 1970 or later, I have no idea what the correct number might be.

It's been a while since I disassembled the rear suspension but my recollection is that the torsion bar and radius arm unstick suddenly when you pull them out. It might not be possible to recover the initial position and count splines. If you want to lower your car you should calculate the ride height you want and decrease the angle accordingly.

When you get the ride height set take a passenger for at least 50 mile ride as the car will settle down at least 1/4 in from your orig setting.
