    Shipping Tips to Europe

I know a lot of people are reluctant to ship parts over to Europe because of it being a hassle. I recently shipped an engine lid to the UK and it arrived in perfect condition and the buyer was very happy with it. What I did was go to the local U-Haul rental location which sells boxes and packaging material and buy a 4" x 30" x 40" box. You see the USPS limit on size is a total girth of 108" which is calculated by length + 2 x width + 2 x height. The length is always the longest measurement so 40" + 8" (2 x width) + 60" (2 x height) = 108". Weight to Europe is capped at 75lbs, this engine lid only weighed 30lbs all packaged up. What I did was build a frame/cage out of 1" x 3" boards that fit inside of the box then wrapped the lid in a moving pad/blanket, besides the square frame I added 2 more boards in the middle of the frame lengthwise. Total cost for shipping was $146, I had to fill out one customs form at the post office and the postal employee behind the counter did the rest. Here is what the buyer sent me in a PM today when he picked up the package:

    Re: 68/9 engine lid

Mike, I picked up the engine lid from the depot today. Many thanks for packing it carefully. It survived the journey without damage. Am very pleased with it.

    Best wishes,

I never really thought about it, but that description sounds exactly like a hassle! However, that does seem to be a reasonable price for shipping overseas.

As Chuck points out, a good price to ship a large part overseas. The treatise on how to properly pack a part should apply whether it's going to Peoria or Paris. Well done.

My roof racks are shipped in a slightly larger box to Europe, and heavily packaged. I use FedEx, and from Seattle it's about $176 and gets there in about a week. I can't get my racks into the slightly smaller box unfortunately.
