Service Offering: Steering Rack Rebuild 69 - 73

I am looking to do another run of 69 - 73 steering racks, it's better to do multiples, so I am looking for a couple as I already have some. The racks get completely disassembled, all parts thoroughly cleaned. Main body is bead blasted and treated, metal parts that need plating get bead blasted and zinc plated. New bearings are installed and everything is reassembled with proper grease and shims.
Price is $200 + return shipping. That includes new bearings and bellows.
    PM if interested.
    Thanks
    Mark..

    Hi Mark

I'm a bit too far away in Australia to capitalise on your excellent offer, but I am interested to know if you're able to supply some of the parts? Specifically I'm interested in the bronze bushings at either end and the plastic/teflon puck.

    Cheers

I would also be very interested in the plastic part that presses the rack!

Sorry, parts are not available from me. I have never actually found a need to replace the bronze bushings as there really is not much wear on them. The plastic bushing can be rotated if it has a small wear groove, or if it's badly worn it can have a light face cut taken off and remove a shim. These parts have lasted 40 years with probably way more miles put on them than they will ever see again.
    Just my thoughts.
    Thanks

I keep hearing about racks with different ratios? Any truth to those stories or is that just an urban legend?

To be honest, I don't know. I always put them back together with the same parts and I have never paid that close attention to the gear count. I don't see how the main rack rod could be any different so it would
have to be the smaller gear and there is not really much room for different sizes. Maybe..

I did a little digging and found the quick rack. It's from Quaife and it's 2.5 turns lock to lock. The problem is it seems to be good only from 1974 to 1989. It won't help my 1973. Oh, I might already be at 2.5 turns. Maybe I should check.

Mark, I realize it's been a while since this post, but are you still offering this service? I'm restoring a '69T and would be interested.

    Thanks,
    Rick
