    How stiff should the clutch pedal be on a 1970 T?

    Just bought a 1970 911T that needs a little cosmetic work (paint, map pockets, etc) but has been well maintained, has great options, never been hit or rusted in any way, and is in astoundingly original condition. Euro car, tangerine on black, with sport seats, deep sixes, etc.

    First things first: the clutch pedal is monstrously stiff. The PO had a new clutch installed a few hundred miles ago, but the cable was not replaced. Externally everything checks out. Pedal cluster was recently rebuilt, free play is correct, Bowden tube is centered in its bracket, etc. But the farther you press down on the pedal, the stiffer it gets. Shifting is difficult. I assume this is just a worn cable? It's been years since I had a longhood so I wanted to see if there's anything I'm missing.

    Disconnect the clutch cable at the ends and make sure it slides back and forth in its housing freely. If it does, the trans will have to be removed to inspect this new clutch.

    Since you mention the Bowden tube this suggests that you understand that the cable for the 911 box is fixed to the trans, and when you pull on the pedal end the effect is to straighten out the bowden tube which then actuates the clutch lever.

    If it is binding the harder you push it, that suggests that it is having trouble moving-- what is the motion of the cable when a helper actuates the clutch while you watch? Carefully support the car while you observe, we don't want it falling on you.

    No it should not be stiff. Imho the 70-71 cars have a pretty light clutch, despite or maybe because of the goofy cable setup. There should be a distinct over center feeling, with the effort reducing at the end of travel. Replace the cable and adjust it properly. Don't risk overstressing the attachment point at the mag gearbox casing or the bulkhead. Pay attention to the tab where the casing slides in and out, the cable/casing could be binding there. Pedal box may also need attention.
