Post SF Bay Area - Introduction and looking for a mentor

    Greetings all,

I've been lurking around these message boards (Pelican, Rennlist, and others) for awhile now and reading as much as I can about early 911's. I love the look, history and the passion these early 911s brings to enthusiast. I've always been a big fan of Porsche growing up, and really started to fall in love with the early 911s when I first came across one approximately 10 yrs ago in Sunol, CA. It was a silver 1967 911S at the time the owner was asking $35k for it. Being that I was in my mid-twenties, I couldn't think about affording it, but I will never forget the opportunity.

Fast forward 10 years (career, house, marriage) and now I am looking on purchasing my first early 911. I look at a couple of cars around the bay area, but not really sure what to look for in the test drive. I understand that a PPI is important and will get one done when the right car comes along. Feeling that I am a total novice, anyone in the bay area willing to coach and mentor me through my first purchase? I am not looking for an investment or concourse type car. I am looking for one I can work on and drive on weekends.

    Thanks reading!
    Tom

Great to hear Tom - suggest going to some events - seeing some cars - talking to and meeting some experienced folk - make some connections and ask around about cars for sale - read the forum posts and be prepared to invest some time - good luck

Thanks Boxster03 for the suggestions. I do plan on attending events and car meetups, just a bit intimidated by it all, but will muster up the courage to talk and make some connections and continue reading and learning.

First Saturday of the month at EASY in Emeryville. Be there. It's early 911 heaven.

The nice thing about coming out to the EASY gathering is that you'll have plenty of opportunities to ask questions and then listen and learn...hope you can make it out!

Lots of us there. It's a great environment where you can see the whole breadth of early car incarnations... survivors, hot-rods, rat-rods, concourse cars, and the odd 944 or GT3 for some reason
All of the owners are super passionate about their rides and usually willing to chat, when we aren't guzzling coffee and stuffing our faces with donuts.
