    Engine type inquiry

    Hi,

I have recently purchased which I thought was a 2.7s 175hp based on the serial 634****. After taking off some of the air ventilation, I was able to see the engine code: 930/02. 930/02 seems to be a 3.0 Carrera engine (200hp). Looking at wayne's book I however cannot make a match between 634**** and 930/02. Can one of the many experts shine their light on this?

    Thanks,
    Martijn

I wasn't aware that Wayne Kreuger wrote a book?

Possibly a replacement restamp? If so, a great engine....
I wasn't aware that the 930/2 was used before the 76 Carrera 3.0
Your number is more like a 74 US 911S or Carrera?
    Is the case aluminum?
Do you have some photos of the number?
    Is the shroud red?

    Hello Harvey,

I have some photos attached. Red shroud. Not sure whether it is alu or magnesium case. Engine type number looks quite original to me. Engine number as well. 6 bolt flywheel.

Odd number combination. 930/02 would indicate a 3.0 alum case with the 86mm head stud spacing. But the s/n of 634XXXX would indicate a 2.7 mag case with 83mm head stud spacing. So if it's a replacement 930/02 case then it should be a 3.0 case, 95mm bore and SC heads.

The case numbers are 901******7R, so weird engine code stamp.
The CIS also has 2.7s number. Also a friend of mine says it is magnesium.

    Thanks all for the input.

The engine type number doesn't look clean to me. It looks like the area might have been altered, perhaps before a restamp? In my book, that engine number came as a 911/93 engine and came in a 1974 911S. Anybody else want to guess on this one?

can you take a better shot of the engine number? in your photo it looks upside down as if it was stamped from bottom to top instead of the other way around...could be just an odd angle
that it was taken. also on one of the case halves there is a small circle with numbers in it ex: 28/74 in a circle signifying the casting date or the 27th week of 1974. this may help finding its origin.

That would also be my best guess without the case in hand.

The stamp direction is correct. I will have a look at the date stamp and get back.

    Thanks to all so far!
