73 S- follow up question re pipe that connects to air cleaner

I have purchased the rubber cap that fits to the bottom of this pipe, and I am wondering what the pipe's purpose is. I assume that the rubber cap fits up high enough to cover the hole that is on the side of pipe, but if so, I am unclear why it (the hole) would be there. The pipe could easy have been made a sealed item, so is there a reason the rubber cap needs to be removed and this item drained of moisture/fuel?? Probably all dumb questions, but this gizmo has me wondering. Thank you.

That is a drain, there should be a slit at the bottom of the rubber tube.

When servicing the car you were expected to 'squeeze' the rubber hose to let out accumulated oil from the aircleaner that would collect from the breather fumes condensing.

From what I remember, the hole on the side of the pipe is what holds the rubber cap on.
I think there's a nub on the inside of the cap to locate and hold it on the tube.

That mounts to the back right of the engine bay. A hose runs from it to the the air filter housing. Without it, the oil from the crank case breather will drip onto the back of your engine making a mess. I extended mind down to the bottom of the engine so any dripping oil does not get on my clean engine.
