Consulting the experts on seat belts...

    Friends,

I am in the middle of a SWB SWT restoration. The seat belts I have are kind of shabby. The chrome will clean up pretty well, but the belt material is worn and frayed. I would pose two questions to the community of enthusiasts...

What would you experts suggest? Use the existing seatbelts are they are? Have someone add new belt webbing? (If so, I'd appreciate recommendations.)

Second, it is not clear to me whether the car came with 3-point belts or lap belts. Does anyone know which is correct? (If I have the option, my preference would be 3-point belts over lap belts, for safety reasons.)

I respect the collective knowledge of the group, so please feel free to opine. Thank you.

Do you want to win a concours or survive a wreck? The two are mutually exclusive given the design of the early SWB belt system.

I believe your car is a 68YM car. It could have come with lap belts because it was sold before Jan of 1968, when all cars sold in the US had to have 3 point belts. All swb 911s have the provisions for 3 point belts built into the car. I would highly recommend 3 point belts over lap belts that offer little in the way of crash protection. US delivered cars got seat belts made by ASE (American Safety Equipment). That sounds like what you have. They can be re webbed but I don't have any recommendations for suppliers.

    Regards

I know I have said this before, but this community is truly remarkable. I wholly agree that 3-point belts are the preferred alternative and that safety must be taken seriously. My car was prior to the 3-point belt requirement, but I believe that I will err toward safety.

Is there anyone out there who knows a supplier who restores seat belts?

    Thanks, again.

I haven't personally used them, but have heard good comments from others.

As you are cutting the three point seat belt retractable into the pillars of your car, pay good attention how it looks/operates. There is a clean way of doing it where it actually looks factory. Specify this as you or your shop come to an assessment in getting it done. (won't cost extra). The same goes to the attachment points in your car.
