    1971 Targa 911T

    Gents,
I am help a old friend to start a 1971 T Targa, original motor/trans, paint, and interior.
What should I look for that is a unique issue on a Targa or for that specific year.
The current owner is the only owner, the car has been outside under a car cover for the last 7 years and not started since.
I have manually turned the motor over, the 2 x batteries are dead. I believe they were 6 volts per battery - but others on the board say the car came with 12 volt battery. I am still confused on this because I saw the empty battery boxes and they were with a pos and neg cables for both lf/rt sides.
I intend to remove any old gas from the tank and replace with fresh gas before hooking a 12 battery to the driver side cables and start the car. The motor turns over easily by hand.
Anything else I need to do?
    Vr,
    Scott

    Both batteries are 12v.

Okay then - good to know. Just to get the car started, can I use one hooked to the driver side?

I would tape off the other battery terminal, when you hook a battery to one side the other will be hot so it could spark against the body.

Just disconnect the connecting cable at the drivers side battery. I wouldn't trust a piece of tape. Why have a hot wire flapping around?

    lol

    Scott,
I have news for you: If the car has the original Bosch fuel pump it's locked up solid. And I would also be surprised if the carbs don't need an enema and cleaning as well. Check all fuel hoses too.

Do your friend a favor and come up with a plan that involves much more precaution and prep. It should also include draining the oil and inspecting the screen along with an oil/filter change of course.

That's a good point, I did not figure they where planning to drive it, just start it.

If you want to drive it, like Frank says, there is a bunch more involved..

I too didn't pick up that it hadn't run in 7 years. I wouldn't even try and start it without a good going through. The are several threads here covering the topic. As Frank says replace any rubber lines. Wash out tank, change oil, pull plugs and squirt some Marvel MO in there turn over by hand to make sure rings aren't stuck, etc. etc. Patience.

    Thanks,
No plan to drive it, just turn it over for a minute and cut off.
Good point with fuel pump. I'll review the threads on cold storage start up procedures.
I inspected the oil stick, brake fluid and both look very good.

They may look good, but after 7 years they aren't. A lot of damage can be done in a minute.
