60 years of FERRARI in the U.S.

Receieved an e-mail from Ferrari of Northe America that they are planning a major event to celebrate six decades of the marque in this country in Beverly Hills, on Rodeo Drive on Sunday, October 12, '14. Luca deMontezemolo will be there in his last official US public appearance. The local FCA chapter has committed to have a 1000 car caravan of Ferraris driving in en-masse. Almost sounds like a something along the lines of a Werks Reunion……..but in red.

As much as I'd like to I can't be there, but perhaps if there are some local tifosi who are enthusiastic enough to make the effort you could post some photos.

A friend of mine, Bruce Meyer, is helping organize it. He told me a few months ago that it will be an incredible collection of vintage Ferrari's. Definitely worth visiting. And when Bruce says incredible, he knows what he is talking about. His 250gt swb won Lemans!

I was on Rodeo Drive in 2009, four blocks from Wilshire, on the off hours of free parking and less traffic. Being an early Sunday morning, the sidewalks were pretty vacant of open retail and ah-hem, tourists. Exploring up and around those high end retail stores like places that will sell $770,000 watches, $3,000 shoes and $18,000 gowns, window displays are very interesting. I happen to glance up to the next storefront, I see none other than Liz Taylor window shopping. She was on a wheelchair, leading a caravan of friends, to some place going the opposite direction.

    Me: Good Morning Mrs. Taylor
Liz: [smiles at me] Hi there, enjoying an early morning walk?
Me: [reaching out my hand to shake hers] But of course, and I see you are doing the same.
Liz: [shakes my hand] So where you from?
Me: Oh, another tourist from the Bay Area.
Liz: Yes, been there many times. Please enjoy yourself here.
Me: [Look up and see her caravan of some pretty stern looking bodyguards staring right at me] I will, and I loved the film Cleopatra. [I was so stunned, I could barely think of any other films she was in]
    Liz: Thank you, Sir
Me: I am glad to meet you Elizabeth Taylor.

I then see her glorious self heading down the block towards Wilshire.

BTW- As fast as I've probably ever been (and maybe ever will be) was in that very car when I was a 18 year old kid and it was just another 6 year old beat up race car..........

    Bruce loved the story...........

It looked like this in and about 1967:

Well lets just say it was another crazy car kid deal we walked away from...

My buddy who was driving (the 18 year old shop owner's son) pretty much flattened 4th gear with the speedo bouncing on 265K... with the same beat bald Cinturato's you see in the picture...... ....... for sure someone up there was looking out for dumbass kids that day..........
