Red's on the road, thanks to group

After more than a year, my '66 912 2.2 conversion is on the road. I wanted to thank the group for the help along the way. Especially Gerard at Kroon Wire Harness in Holland who helped me in a big way by preparing a partial wiring harness and sorting out wiring gremlins. Also Paul Abbott at Performance Oriented who answered many Zenith questions even though I've never been a customer. I'm constantly amazed at how free people on this board are with their time. Also amazing how willing they are to educate a guy whose experience trends more toward 440 Mopar lumps than flat-six 911 engines. How did people do this before the internet?

I bought the car sight-unseen in Texas without an engine. I shipped it to Montana, where I moved from Baltimore. The car arrived before I did. It was the first time I've had a garage since I left my parent's house in Michigan in 1990. I figured if I was moving to the boonies, at least I'd get a garage out of the deal. I'd been putting away 911 money for several years. But for every $2,000 saved, early 911 prices increased $4,000. Ah, the cars I passed up! Despite much advice to buy an SC, I ultimately decided a 912 without an engine offered me the best bang for the available bucks.

Story goes that two owners back, a p.o. wrecked a SWB 911 and converted most of the bits over to this car. Was repainted original polo red in the mid '90s. Guy I bought the car from sold the '66 engine to a guy we've all heard about in Wyoming. Wood wheel sold to someone else. I installed a stock 1971 2.2 T engine. Still trying to figure out what to do as far as a wheel and the larger-than-stock radio hole in the dash . I've been working out quirks since then (mainly during my 2-year-old's naps). Last week, I registered a 1966 Montana license plate and took it for its first ride. Felt great. It's far from perfect, and there's plenty of things to do, but I'm pretty pleased. Thanks again for the help and inspiration.

What's next? I'm thinking mild hot rod treatment.

Looks great. Congrats on getting it up and running. I think you are right, a little hot rodding could be cool. What kind of things did you have in mind?

Congrats on getting the car on the road. It looks great! Suggestion for the radio hole, check out the Porsche blanking plates or if its too small, fab your own.

Thanks, guys. Good suggestion on the radio hole. I'm thinking widened steelies, suspension mods, and eventually perhaps a bit more horsepower.

Great pictures Joe, reminds me of my old 912 (it was white but originally also red)
