    Bob,

Undo your earths on you batteries. Always a good idea when working with your electric's, especially with globes as most are earthed to the body.

Get a nice clean pry ( a clean kitchen knife, works) slide it up under the edge of the bezel around the light, and lift one side out.

Replace your globe, and push it back in place.

This is all assuming that your door switch isn't the problem. Located on the A pillar, again it's earthed to the body.

    Hope that helps
    Tony

Is the headliner stuffed behind the light?

It's not really stuffed, it's only about 5mm excess behind the light.

on the headliner i have found that sometimes it gets in the way of a clean earth or otherwise stops the light working when you push it back in - a quick pull out and refit usually solves it for me

Definitely undo the ground from the battery as Tony said. I was helping my neighbor with his 356, and he grounded the hot leg aginst the chassis pulling it out. He just burned the fuse so no harm done. Also as Hugh said, initially when he put it back in the headliner prevented grounding. It worked with the door switch ground, but not when it was swithed on at the light itself.
