Thread: Mirror at the right side 2.4 1973

  1. #21
    Hello,
First of all I have to explain why I am so interested in that mirror on the right side. I bought three years ago a 911 S and meanwhile is the car like new and very original. Unfortunately came the car to me with the mirror on the right side.

After three years hard work I realized that I have never seen a 911 model year 73 with a mirror on the right side. Now I am looking for evidence that the mirror was an option in 1973. Otherwise I have some work to remove the holes.
One thing is for sure, Porsche offered in 1972 the right mirror as option in their accessory-list (M 261).

I guess Jim is right, all rectangular mirrors for the right side (model year 73) are after market products and the photos in the sales brochures are not realiable.
Cheers and thanks for your comments........Oliver

My almost completely original '72 has a right-hand flag mirror that was installed when fairly new. The only thing is the mirror is from BMW. During this period, Porsche owners would often install BMW mirrors if they wanted right-hand flags as BMW offered them before Porsche did and they were very close in appearance to the Porsche flags. This was fairly common practice back in the day.

Yes, Reed. That was the only mirror that came close to matching the 72/73 mirror. Thank you for mentioning that.

Trust me when I tell you there wasn't a right hand flag available from Porsche in 72 or 73.
I was working in parts department at that time and we tried everything to get one from Porsche.
    The option was round....
All of the square ones are aftermarket...that includes brand X...

Hi all, picking up this old thread because I recently bought a 1973 911T that has 2 round mirrors. I would like to replace these for (small) flag mirrors but I cant find a used orginal right side mirror (prefered instead of new on an unrestored car). And then I read this post from Harvey :
+1 The right hand square mirrors are aftermarket. When ordering two mirrors in 72 or 73 you would get round mirrors.

Could explain why my car has 2 round mirrors, allthough not mentioned as option in the birth certificate. Name: 20240921_152053.jpg

Post #4 in this thread seems to reinforce Mr. Weidman’s experience and may answer your question: https://www.early911sregistry.org/fo...or-help-needed

Thnx ! No need to search for original RH side mirror obviously. Not sure now what I would do : keep it as it is with the 2 round mirrors or replace anyway with (small) flags. I prefer the flags for 2 reasons : they look far better imho then the round ones and give better visibility. Drivers side I can buy an original used one from a friend. RH side I'll have to buy a new reproduction or take of mirror and find an acceptable solution to fill the 2 wholes :-).

As others have said no flag mirrors on passenger side on lhd in 73. British market rhd got single round mirror on drivers side as standard on drivers side. Sweden and possibly other market regulators required two mirrors so round pair one of uniquely mentioned in the 72/73 factory parts book had convex reflector. There was M option for two mirrors (round) I’ve heard it said visibility through that arrangement could be challenging if they were mounted symmetrically so sometimes not always fitted position to match. I seem to recall Mirrors l&r were option M062 but my memory may be fallible ?

Thnx Steve. RH mirror is positioned more backwards as it should be, but visibility is very poor due to limited adjustability of the round mirror. Another reason to replace it or just delete it.

Maybe try putting different shaped reflective glass in the round one to see if it helps rearward visibility that is if “originality” of the factory solution of a round pair is more desirable. Knowledgable folks know there wouldn’t have been a flag pair in 73 after all.

Don’t know the spec of the rare Swedish convex mirror glass but expect it was probably required by Swedish regulator to be different shape glass for a good reason. From photos of the Swedish Crown Prince’s (o 73 targa that seems to have that configuration. Hard to be sure but seems symmetrical so is it just different shape reflector in the usual Durant round hardware.

In which case just experiment at first with cheap stick-on blind spot mirror/s that can be bought cheap on eBay to do quick mock-up experimentation see which if any change of shape would help with current position of round Durant you have. If it works then could replace the flat glass in current mirror with different suitable shape … or maybe even try to find a rare original Swedish one if the curve helps.

PS is that a pair of aerials left and right on the car in one of the photos; and it had wash/wiper system for headlights?
