Thread: Bearing/Spacer alignment issue

First, realize that taper roller bearings need a slight preload, there is a factory procedure in the shop manual, but I don't do it that way as if not very careful you can bend the bearing cage. With the brake pads pushed back, so no pad drag to interfere, I over tighten the spindle nut and rotate the hub to fully seat everything. Then back off spindle nut until you fell free play when rocking the hub by grabbing at 12 and 6 o;clock position, now slowly t5ighten spindle nut until you just reach the point of no free play, from that point tighten the spindle nut about a 1/16th turn further, there should be no free play and the bearings will be slightly preloaded. When rotating hub (pads still back) it should rotate freely but NOT free wheel much.

Where can I find a step by step process to tighten my front wheel bearings? I looked in Hayne and 101 projects but no luck. The search on this forum led me only to here. I actually heard you tighten all the way then back off the spindle nut a quarter turn. If you over tighten, you fry the bearings.

When I did my bearings I followed the instructions in Waynes book which is pretty straight forward James. Just scroll down to figures 16 and 17 and it will show you how it's done. HTH
